Hardship can narrow our vision until the present pain feels like the entire story. We may wonder whether endurance is accomplishing anything at all.
Paul traces a difficult but hopeful movement: suffering produces endurance, endurance shapes character, and character strengthens hope. Pain is not called good, but God refuses to waste what is surrendered to Him.
Our hope rests finally in Christ and in God’s love poured into our hearts. We can seek help, grieve honestly, and keep moving because suffering does not possess the authority to write the ending.
